Pride is a slippery slope!

Part Two

The Deadly Consequences of Pride

As we continue our series "Lessons from Abimelech: Warnings and Encouragement for Pastors," we come face to face with a sobering reality: the deadly consequences of pride.

The Tragic Story of Abimelech's Rule

In Judges 9:5-6, we read about Abimelech's brutal massacre of his own family: "Abimelech went to his father's family in Ophrah and killed seventy of his brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baalseshath, on one stone."

This heinous act was a direct result of Abimelech's pride and arrogance.

He was so determined to become king that he was willing to eliminate anyone who stood in his way, including his own brothers.

The Dangers of Unchecked Pride

As leaders, we must recognize the dangers of unchecked pride. When we allow pride to take hold of our hearts, it can lead us down a path of destruction. We begin to think that we are above the law, that we are invincible, and that we can do whatever it takes to achieve our goals.

But the truth is, pride is a slippery slope.

It can lead us to compromise our values, betray our trust, and harm those around us. And ultimately, it can lead to our downfall.

The Importance of Humility

So what's the antidote to pride? Humility.

As leaders, we must work to cultivate humility in our hearts and minds. We must recognize that we are not above the law, that we are not invincible, and that we need God's guidance and wisdom to lead us.

Humility is not about being weak or timid. It's about being strong enough to recognize our limitations, to admit when we're wrong, and to surrender to God's will.

Lessons for Pastors and Church Leaders

So what can we learn from Abimelech's tragic story? Here are a few takeaways:

  • Watch out for pride: Be aware of the pride that can creep into your heart and mind. Recognize its dangers and take steps to cultivate humility instead.

  • Value accountability: Surround yourself with people who will speak truth to you, challenge you, and keep you accountable to God's standards.

  • Seek God's guidance: Don't rely on your own wisdom and strength. Seek God's guidance and wisdom to lead you and your congregation.

Invitation to Day 3

Join us tomorrow as we explore Day 3: "The People's Compromise." We'll dive into the story of how the people of Shechem compromised their values and principles, and what we can learn from their mistakes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to recognize the dangers of pride and to cultivate humility in our hearts and minds. May we seek Your guidance and wisdom to lead us and our congregations with wisdom and integrity. Amen.
