As citizens of heaven, we are called to engage in earthly politics with a unique perspective. Our allegiance to God and His kingdom should guide our political decisions and actions. Here’s how we can do that:
1. Understanding Our Dual Citizenship
As Christians, we have dual citizenship. We are citizens of our earthly nations, but we also hold citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20). This heavenly citizenship should shape our earthly political engagement. We are called to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8), and these principles should guide our political choices.
2. Engaging with Love and Respect
In our political discussions and debates, we must remember the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). This means engaging with respect, listening to differing opinions, and seeking understanding. It also means standing against injustice and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9).
3. Praying for Our Leaders
Regardless of our political affiliations, we are called to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2). We should pray for wisdom, justice, and peace. We should also pray for the courage to speak truth to power when necessary.
4. Seeking the Welfare of Our Cities
Jeremiah 29:7 calls us to seek the welfare of the city where we live, for in its welfare we will find our welfare. This means working for the common good, advocating for policies that promote justice and wellbeing for all citizens.
5. Remembering Our Ultimate Hope
While we engage in earthly politics, we must remember that our ultimate hope is not in any political leader or party, but in God. His kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36), and our ultimate allegiance is to Him.
In conclusion, as citizens of heaven, we are called to engage in earthly politics in a way that reflects our heavenly citizenship. We are called to love, respect, pray, seek justice, and remember our ultimate hope is in God. Let’s strive to do this in our political engagement.
