Faith at the Ballot Box: A Journey into Being Responsible.

Bradley Wareley

From a Christian point of view, democracy is not just about politics. It’s also a way for us to live out our faith in public. This journey is about understanding and taking up our political responsibility as followers of Jesus.

Understanding Democracy

Democracy is a system that lets people have a say in how their country is run. It’s about having the freedom to share our views and help shape our society. As Christians, we are called to be “salt and light” in the world (Matthew 5:13-14), and democracy gives us the chance to do so.

Our Role as Citizens

As citizens, we have a role to play in our democracy. We need to take part, not just watch from the sidelines. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 13:1 that “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” This means that taking part in politics is a way of honoring God.

Voting is Important

Voting is one of the most important things we can do as citizens. It’s a way for us to use the resources and freedoms that God has given us wisely. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” By voting, we can help decide who leads us and how they govern.

Standing Up for Justice

The Bible calls us to seek justice and to stand up for the oppressed (Psalm 82:3). As Christians, we need to bring these values into our political actions. We should support policies and leaders that uphold justice and care for the marginalized.

Conclusion

Making democracy better is about more than just voting. It’s about bringing our faith into our political actions, standing up for justice, and using our resources wisely. As we journey into being politically responsible, let us remember the words of Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” This is our calling as Christians in a democratic society.
