Faith at the Ballot Box: A Guide for Evangelical Christians Preparing to Vote.

Bradley Wareley

As followers of Christ, we are called to be the salt and light of the world (Matthew 5:13-14). This includes our participation in the political process. Here are some expanded guidelines to consider as you prepare to vote:

Seek Divine Guidance

Start with prayer. Ask God for wisdom as James 1:5 advises us. Pray for discernment to understand the issues, to see the truth, and to make wise decisions.

Educate Yourself

Take the initiative to educate yourself about the political landscape. Understand the political parties, their platforms, and their track records. Proverbs 18:13 warns against answering a matter before hearing it. So, listen, read, and ask questions.

Reflect on Your Faith

Consider how your faith informs your political choices. What does the Bible say about justice, mercy, and humility? How do these principles align with the policies and candidates you are considering?

Think of the Greater Good

Philippians 2:4 instructs us to look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others. As you prepare to vote, consider how your vote will impact your community, especially the most vulnerable.

Exercise Your Right

Your vote is a stewardship of the resources and freedoms God has given us. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Make your vote count.

Engage in Respectful Dialogue

Engage in respectful dialogue with others, even those with differing views. Remember, we are all part of the body of Christ, and each of us has a unique perspective.

Pray for Leaders

Regardless of the election outcome, continue to pray for your leaders as instructed in 1 Timothy 2:1-2. Pray for wisdom, integrity, and guidance for them.

Be Consistent with Your Values

Ensure that your political choices align with your Christian values. The Bible provides guidance on many issues we face in society today. Use these teachings as a compass when deciding who to vote for.

Respect the Views of Others

Remember that everyone, including other Christians, may have different views. It’s important to respect these differences. Engaging in respectful dialogue can lead to a deeper understanding of the issues.

Stay Informed

Stay informed about current events and the positions of the candidates. This will help you make an informed decision when voting.

Pray for Peace

Pray for peace during the election period. Elections can sometimes lead to tension and conflict. Pray for a peaceful election and for the safety of all voters.

Encourage Others to Vote

Encourage other members of your community to exercise their right to vote. Remember, every vote counts.

Trust in God’s Sovereignty

Finally, after you have cast your vote, trust in God’s sovereignty. God is in control of all things, including the outcome of elections. Pray for the elected leaders, whether they were your preferred candidates or not.

Remember, voting is not just a civic duty, but also a spiritual one. As Christians, we have the opportunity to bring our faith into the voting booth and impact our society for the better. Let’s make our voices heard and let our votes count.
